Cynthia Hawkins, born 1950, New York City, is an artist, educator and curator. She is currently director of galleries at The State University of New York (SUNY), Geneseo and a PhD candidate at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Arts from Seton Hall University. As a PhD candidate, her focus is in museum formation in the U.S., and the attending effects of Jim Crow on Black artistic participation, audience access, social policy, national identity construction, imperialist representations of the colonized and the resulting legacy in the post colonial period. As artist, she has exhibited widely and had solo exhibitions at Just Above Midtown/Downtown Gallery, New York, NY; Cinque Gallery, New York, NY; Wilmer Jennings Gallery, New York, NY; Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York, NY; Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, NJ; and Rush Arts Gallery, New York, NY among others. Among her projects as an independent curator is African American Printmakers: The Legacy Continues: a traveling exhibition, since 2003.
